Who is Uncle Sam?

Back in the mid 1970s I bought a ’63 Thunderbird, one could say this was for me a bit of a  gateway drug.

Over the following decade my thirst for the American car was slaked by a succession of “Yanks” to use the vernacular . Each one bringing its own perils and pitfalls, I enjoyed them all and learned from every one.

By the 1980s My interests shifted more towards the prestige British motorcar and over the following twenty years many Rolls Royce and Bentley cars passed through my workshop and ownership. They were fun, I liked them but something was missing coupled with the fact that the old Yanks are cheaper and easier to work on and maintain.

By 2010, I effectively retired having sold my business and moved my family to Devon and set about occupying the time in my new life.

It wasn’t long before the craving returned and I found myself scouring classic car magazines in search of something to own.

I ended up with a ’55 Cadillac, something you don’t see every day in the lanes of Dartmoor!

It became a standing joke, that of a Friday evening outside the local, there would often be a ’55 Caddy trying to hide among the Land Rovers and Hilux trucks.

The Caddy drew a great deal of interest wherever it went and it was then that I began to realize that there was a potential market for this type of car in the UK, so with the help of my cousin and a friend in California, I began sourcing and importing “Yanks”

Over the past few years we have progressed from simply having a couple of vehicles at any one time to having a varying stock of over twenty, ranging from general cars through to the iconic step side trucks.

So just remember folks, the best journeys in American classics begin at Uncle Sam’s Autos!

Hi Curly, Just to let you know have just got home and true to your word it didn’t miss a beat. Loved every minute of the drive back although felt like a gold fish in a bowl as people taking pictures and filming haha. Even fits on my drive which I was really worried about. Thank you and your wife once again for your hospitality and you were a pleasure to deal with. Many thanks, Spencer.

Good afternoon Curly, I just thought I would drop you a quick line to say how pleased I am with the 1952 Ford F1 pickup I had off of you, It was in good  condition and have found most body and chassis components much better than I expected. I am looking forward to getting this truck on the road this spring and may well pop down to see you.
Thanks again, JA (worcs)
